Relentless Pursuit of Process Safety, Energy Optimization, and Operational Excellence

Operational Excellence has been the primary pursuit of the process industries for the past decade.  This pursuit has been motivated by many factors including international competition, sustainable growth, and increased shareholder value.  The decades long pursuit of operational excellence has been compounded by the global economic crisis, an increasing need for energy efficiency, and a greater drive toward process safety and implementation of a safety culture.  New strategies must be developed to deal with these challenges to ensure long term survival.

Operations Management and AutomationProcess safety, for example, has been part of the strategies of most owner/operators.  As the workforce gets younger and less experienced, there has been a paradigm shift in the tools available to convert safety strategies into tactics.  Many of today’s process industry operations rely on technology and traditional operator training alone to ensure that processes run safely.  During normal operations, this may be sufficient.  However, the world is experiencing more and more abnormal events that test the industry’s preparedness.

Process industries are the largest and most intense consumers of energy.  While many are in the energy producing businesses, they all recognize that optimizing their own use of energy is essential to their future.  The efforts to date to reduce energy consumption have to be redoubled in coming years to meet not only profitability objectives, but also more stringent environmental regulations.  Companies that prepare now will have the edge on those that continue on the path they have been on.  ARC believes that we are just starting to scratch the surface when it comes to energy saving opportunities.

This program is full of information, technology, and most importantly, experiences to help you shape your own sustainable strategies.  You will be able to hear from other executives as well as discuss their views and compare them to your own on questions such as the following:

Energy Management Strategies for Operational Excellence
Energy Management has become an increasingly important part of industries pursuit of operational excellence.  Not only is energy expensive, but the excessive use of energy has consequences beyond the bottom line.  This session will include a discussion of latest developments and industry experiences in Energy Management and Optimization. 
Enterprise Mobility Strategies and Solutions
"The smartphone is the new computer" may be a bit of an exaggeration, but there is no doubt that mobility solutions are beginning to make a big impact in businesses of all kinds.  The trend is away from dedicated mobile devices, or company-issued handsets to employee-owned devices powered by Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM, or others.  Join this session to learn how utilities and manufacturers are deploying the new technologies, what solution capabilities exist, trends, and future plans. 
Remote Operations Management

Secure remote access to automation systems and applications is now a necessity.  An increasing number of process operations are also located in remote and hostile environments, such as the ocean floor or the remote desert.  A remote maintenance and performance management solution can increase return on assets and considerably reduce maintenance costs. Suppliers are also offering a wider range of virtual training programs that provide a hands on experience for remote users with shrinking travel budgets.  We will see some success stories related to remote operations management followed by a brief panel discussion.

What Does State-of-the-Art Process Automation Look Like?

Automation systems and the process industries are intertwined.  Modern process plants cannot operate without automation systems.  Yet how process automation is used and applied varies widely.  Many are using strategies and features that are decades old.  The objective of this session is to inform and enlighten attendees that state-of-the-art control system implementations do exist.  Moreover, benefits of adopting and utilizing the capabilities of state-of-the-art process automation will be presented and discussed.

Smart Infrastructure for Energy Management

Intelligent plant control is growing from its traditional role of control and protection into a ‘smart energy’ infrastructure that enables advanced energy applications.  Uptime and equipment reliability remain critical.  But beyond this, owner-operators will seek to derive additional value from energy infrastructure that can operate intelligently in the era of the Smart Grid, electric power markets, and volatile electricity prices.

This session will address advances in intelligent control technology for electric equipment, showing how several leading plants are utilizing real-time monitoring and energy integration with their production operations.  It is designed for end users, equipment suppliers, and engineering service firms who work with energy-intensive electric-powered equipment, control equipment, and systems.


What Makes a Safety Culture: People, Processes, and Technology

Safety in all its aspects is in the forefront of industrial thinking, as it should be.  So much is at stake.  By addressing safety in a holistic manner, many companies have positively impacted their bottom line.  This session will examine the topic of safety from several aspects.  One of these is the "culture" to support safety.  Another is "technology" to provide safe operation.  Another is "safety by design" in the pursuit of building the facility with safe operation as a primary goal. 

Manufacturing Sustainability Strategies and Solutions
For many companies, sustainability means having significant corporate level programs to demonstrate they intend to convert to more renewable resources, reduce green house gas emissions, and reduce their carbon footprint.  There is a common belief this is the socially correct thing to do, and that shareholders demand sustainability.  Walmart and many other customers expect their suppliers (food, beverage, CPG, high tech, discrete, and other manufacturers) to achieve significant improvement in support of their sustainability initiatives.  However, these manufacturers face a more immediate pressure — the high cost of energy, limited water resources, and the “producer payback” initiative that is already enforced in most industrial nations.   Energy and waste reduction programs and modeling and optimization solutions have now become an integral part of the manufacturing and supply chain operations of leading companies.
Energy Management and the Evolution of Intelligent Motor Control and Drives

Intelligent motor control and drives have evolved from being just a safe, flexible and centralized means to control and protect motors, to a ‘smart’ energy manager that brings advances in applications ranging from the most complex auxiliary drive systems to the most basic control of fan or pump motors.  Uptime and equipment reliability are critical in applications where even a short period of downtime can prove extremely costly. This is where the implementation of intelligent motor control and drives play an increasingly important role, performing critical protective and troubleshooting functions while providing detailed diagnostics to help improve productivity and minimize downtime.   This session will address advances in intelligent motor control and drives technology,  including how plants are leveraging  real-time monitoring and integration into its plant-wide networks.

This session is designed for end users, equipment suppliers, and engineering service firms who work with Motor Control, Drives and Energy Management.

Process Automation Systems Lifecycle Management
Process automation system migration remains a major issue for end users as they deal with an increasingly older installed base.  In terms of sustainability, older systems can significantly hamper end user efforts to reduce maintenance costs, get a handle on power management, provide appropriate documentation and traceability for regulatory requirements, and much more.  The IT-related infrastructure of modern process automation systems also presents many lifecycle management issues of its own.  This session is designed to show end users how they can develop a cost effective lifecycle management strategy that addresses the need for sustainability in manufacturing at the same time. 
Speed, Innovation, Quality, and Cost:  Benefits of Connecting PLM to the Plant Floor
Effective end-to-end product lifecycle management requires close connectivity between product design systems and machine tool and plant floor systems.  The lifecycle begins with concept and innovation, moves through product design, production design (including automation and controls), and manufacturing.  Today's integrated end-to-end solutions support a process chain from product design through part and process planning to execution on machine tools and production equipment.  Consistently achieving the desired product quality requires that the design and production systems remain aligned, while needed changes are introduced at various points throughout the process as suppliers change, errors are caught, requirements evolve, and refinements are made.  Manufacturers need to close the loop between factory operations and product design and manufacturing process engineering, with better information flow in both directions and better simulation tools. 

This session will feature leading manufacturers that are using these end-to-end product and process solutions and will focus on benefits such as reducing time-to market, improving quality, and reducing costs. 
Industrial Wireless Standards
This session will include a panel discussion where end users  discuss the importance of a single unified standard for wireless communications. 
Workforce Development

The Automation Federation is pleased to present a session at the 2011 ARC Forum that will discuss the AF Workforce Development Initiative and the focus of this Initiative on the Automation Competency Model developed by the Automation Federation and The US Department of Labor in 2009.  The session will feature Dean Ford, Steve Pflantz, and Jerry Gipson, who will discuss the Automation Competency Model, how it has been a catalyst to focus attention on the importance of the automation profession, and what it means for the future of manufacturing.

Modular Procedural Automation
Procedures govern the world of process automation.  While we like to refer to the process industries as being largely “continuous,” this could not be further from the truth.  Process manufacturing is constantly in flux.  Whether you are doing a startup, shutdown, grade change, or are in the middle of a maintenance turnaround, your plant is governed by procedures and transitional states that can either run smoothly and provide superior plant performance and a safe and orderly start-up/shutdown, or they can result in  costly unplanned shutdowns, incidents, lost product, and lost opportunities.  The ISA 106 standard promises to address many of the requirements of the process industries regarding procedural automation.  We will talk about ISA 106 and the overall need for procedural automation in the process industries. 
Industry Standards Update
Several executives will provide an update on the latest industry standards.
Plant Performance Benchmarking (End Users Only)
The Benchmarking Consortium members will meet to continue discussion of metrics and how they are benefitting from the data. In addition to open discussion about metrics and benchmarking, an owner/operator member will discuss the value associated with using metirics and benchmarking as part of a continuous improvement program for operational excellence.
