Presenting ARC's Fifth India Forum

Winning Strategies and Best Practices for Process Industries

July 10-12, 2008 - Hyderabad, India

ARC India Forum Presents Strategies to Win in the Global Marketplace

ARC India’s Fifth International Forum in Hyderabad attracted over 290 delegates from 90 manufacturing companies.  Almost two thirds of the delegates who attended the Forum are end users.  The three-day Forum focused on India’s process industry challenges and charted a roadmap to successfully overcome them.  The Forum was structured to help senior executives from process industries, responsible for developing and implementing automation and enterprise strategies, emerge best-in-class, and gain global competitiveness through continuous improvements.  Over 50 speakers from different industry verticals shared their thoughts and experiences through presentations, helping the delegates to absorb and understand various techniques and strategies.

Technology and Benchmarking Workshops
The Forum started with the Enterprise Integration and Service Oriented Architecture Workshop with Ashok Bhattacharya, Chief SOA Architect at IBM.  This was followed by the Imperatives and Challenges of Plant-wide Automation and Factory/Enterprise Integration Workshop with Paramanand Choudhury, Business Manager at Rockwell Automation.  While Thomas Bartsch, Head Profibus PA Marketing Working Group at PNO Foundation Germany conducted a workshop on Profibus, Ed Ladd, Director of Technology Programs at HART Communication Foundation USA, made a presentation on WirelessHART for process measurement and control applications.  The Benchmarking session conducted by ARC President Andy Chatha generated considerable interest.

The workshop session concluded with a lively panel discussion on ‘The Indian Economy Needs an Expanding Manufacturing Industry and Manufacturing Needs Automation for Gaining the Competitive Edge’, providing an excellent platform for suppliers and end users to exchange their thoughts on the future of manufacturingAutomation supplier viewpoints were projected by Sunil Khanna of the Automation Industry Association (AIA) and Emerson Process India, N Ravi of ABB, John Watts of Rockwell Automation Asia Pacific, and Jyotindra Verma of Siemens. The end user perspective was represented by BR Mehta of Reliance Industries, KV Rehani of Unilever, and VK Srivastava of Bhilai Steel Plant.  The panel discussion was chaired by Andy Chatha.

Strategy Sessions
The next two days of the Forum had strategy sessions and case studies that focused on specific industry challenges and solutions.  ARC's Andy Chatha, Satyam's Subu Subramanian, Rockwell Automation's John Watts, and Siemens PLM Software's A Ramamurthi spoke about the emerging process plant concepts and the digital plant of the future.  BR Mehta, Senior VP at Reliance Industries said that to derive operational excellence in process plants, it is necessary to enhance investments in automation and enterprise solutions.  Their presentations were followed by a panel discussion on ‘Manufacturing of the Future Will Be Predominantly Automation and IT Enabled'.  An interesting concept that emerged from the discussions was the need for a ‘Digital Plant Contractor’.

Industry Tracks
The last day of the Forum was devoted to discussing solutions that address specific challenges for different industries, including chemical, oil & gas, refining, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, captive power plants; cement, metals & mining, and pulp & paper.  How automation and information technologies address the manufacturing industry’s core challenges from a strategic perspective were presented through case studies.  Additionally, topics relating to the energy cost control, legacy system migration, interoperability issues, plant asset, and information management, process alarm management, collaborative production management, and such others were discussed.

Global Suppliers and Organizations Commit Their Resources to the Expanding Indian Market
Gauging the immense business potential and networking opportunities that the ARC forum offers, companies such as ABB, IBM, Invensys, National Instruments, Ramco Systems, Rockwell Automation, SAP, Rolta, Satyam Computers, Siemens, SSM India, SUPCON China, and Pepperl+Fuchs, joined organizations such as AIA, HCF, OPC and ISA in sponsoring the forum.  They came together to share their experiences and strategies with the delegates through case studies on how investments in automation systems, enterprise solutions, and manufacturing execution systems would help industries become globally competitive.

The Forum also served as a platform for global organizations to announce the commitment of their interest and resources to the expanding Indian market.  AIA's President, Sunil Khanna and Vice President, Vimal Kapur, announced that they would be hosting the Automation Global Summit in September 2009 with ARC as its knowledge partner.  Ken Baker, former President of ISA, said that India will receive special focus in the ensuing months.  Ed Ladd of the HART Communication Foundation is of the opinion that India’s growing automation market presents an excellent opportunity to introduce emerging technologies, such as wireless in automation.  Invited delegates said that the ARC forum presented them a unique opportunity to track the trends in the automation and enterprise solutions space and how to derive maximum benefit from it.

Topics

The Forum begins with a workshop on benchmarking and best practices.  The second day is devoted to deliberations on how automation and information technologies address the manufacturing industry’s core challenges from a strategic perspective.  The last day of the Forum is devoted to discussions on solutions that address the specific industry challenges.

Resulting from manufacturing industry’s rapid growth, India is facing severe power shortages.  Despite the expected increase in the generating capacity moving from the present 124,000 MW to close to 200,000 MW by 2012, the power situation looks grim.  Realizing that the shortfall would impede manufacturing growth, the Indian State is encouraging investments in utilities and captive power plants and funding life extension programs of existing power plants.  The transmission and distribution side of the electric power industry have been hived off from the power generation companies by deregulating the electric industry.  These developments in the electric power industry augur well not only for automation and enterprise system suppliers but also for the industry as it begins to appreciate the benefits of leveraging enabling technologies to improve performance and operational efficiencies.

The Indian State is also focused on demand side issues with the ‘Energy Conservation Act’.  To realize the potential of these initiatives fully and reduce or eliminate the electric power shortfall, it is incumbent upon manufacturers to adopt energy conservation policies and energy conserving devices, such as AC drives and energy efficient transformers.  It paves the way for many of the energy intensive industries such as aluminum, cement, and steel to maximize investments in energy conservation measures.

The metals industry in India is on the upswing.  It has taken the initiative to desegregate the industry into metal production and finished products.  It is making bold expansion plans worldwide and creating a global ecosystem.  Success in this endeavor calls for very close integration between production centers at plant and enterprise levels.  It calls for collaboration across people, processes, technology, and information.  Interoperability among deployed systems is the key enabler for achieving the effective collaboration.  These developments will lead to suppliers and users forging win-win relationships.

India's pharmaceutical industry is closely aligned with the global norms in terms of technology, quality control, best practices, and others.  The main forte of domestic pharmaceutical companies with their ‘good manufacturing practices’ (GMP) compliant facilities is drug production.  These companies, with their rich pool of scientific talent and research capabilities are well set to emerge as leading players in the global pharmaceutical market.  They have to leverage technology to ensure compliance to 21 CFR Part 11 in terms of traceability, process compliance, etc., to emerge stronger in the global pharmaceutical market.  With the pharmaceutical industry expanding further, the symbiotic relationship between pharmaceutical companies and suppliers of automation and enterprise solutions is bound to increase.
