Crowdsourced-Driven Reliability

Keywords: Operator-Driven Reliability, Smartphone, Mobility, Social Networking.

Most manufacturers and industrial organizations have a run-to-failure maintenance strategy for the majority of their non-critical assets. However, since employees see their work areas daily and are often aware of a change, they observe conditions that are potential asset failures. They also have the intelligence and positive self-interest to report issues appropriately. Employees outside of the maintenance department represent a resource that can enhance the run-to-failure maintenance strategy for higher reliability. "Crowdsourced-driven reliability" helps make maintenance personnel aware of impending fail-ures so they can take action before cascading into a major expense for re-pair.

Consumer IT Enables New Approach to Reliability
Consumer IT – particularly for collaboration – has changed expectations for business IT. Mobility, cloud and social networking technologies have matured in the consumer space. Applications like Google for search, Fa-cebook and Twitter for social networking, and Apple iOS and Android for a mobile user interface have reset the user's paradigm for how software should behave. The new expectations are now moving into business applications. Applying these trends to operator-driven reliability enables an expanded view that includes the broader community of employees.
