Can 3D Scanning and Printing Be Applied to Reduce Spare Parts Requirements?

Keywords: 3D Scan, 3D Print, MRO Inventory, Spare Parts.

Maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) inventory expands with time as new items are added and old ones stay in place. Inventory obsolescence represents a significant risk, but three-dimensional (3D) printing offers one possible solution to help reduce this risk. Many companies today apply 3D printing to rapid prototyping of new products. The technology has matured to the degree that 3D-scanned-and-printed materials can now also be considered for some replacement parts, thus reducing the need to inventory spares, particularly for older machines or unusual part failures.
