While the servo drive remains an important component in the motion control market, the market will move away from suppliers with one dimensional product lines. However, there remain a few exceptions where small players in the low power, high volume, low cost market continue to have cost advantages.
The overall unit volume of servo drive systems is clearly concentrated in the lower power range of the market, but high power drives continue to remain a very profitable segment of the market for servo suppliers. A significant challenge in the high power sector of the market is to minimize development and design costs.
Servo drive pricing has also continued to decline over the last 10 years by at least 50%. In effect, the IGBT power stages have continued to decline in cost. These cost savings are being passed on to customers, but not in total. The reason for this is that servo drive systems have radically increased their overall embedded intelligence. All are moving toward the integration of a Digital Signal Processing (DSP) component. The DSP has virtually displaced all of the analog drives that were dominant in the market.
