Overview

Services and Supervisory Software Drive Growth
HMI software suppliers are continuing to add services at an accelerated rate, driven by the end users’ and OEMs’ need for technical support, because manufacturers no longer have the personnel internally to provide the services. Also, Supervisory HMI software, which is used to support HMI software functionality, such as configuration, runtime, connectivity, control, and alarm management, had the fastest growth of any HMI software type. Growth in this segment indicates how HMI software suppliers are expanding their application space, and it represents the direction that the HMI software market is heading over the next five year period.

Windows XP was the fastest growing operating system in terms of revenue. However, Windows CE was the fastest growing operating system in terms of units. This growth was due to Windows CE replacing proprietary software embedded in devices. HMI software suppliers had their best regional development in Asia; however, North America and EMEA also experienced strong growth. The common denominator was the growth of HMI software solutions tied to Programmable Automation Controllers in the process and hybrid industries, led by oil & gas, water & wastewater, mining & metals, and electric power. The food & beverage industry maintains its leading industry position.

ARC predicts that the Asia Pacific and Latin American HMI Software markets will be the fastest growing areas. North America and EMEA will be growing at a considerably slower rate. ARC believes that a significant amount of HMI Software adoption has already taken place in these mature markets, especially in the North America and Western Europe Automotive industry.

Strategic Issues
This study provides an in-depth analysis of the worldwide HMI software and services market. In addition, it provides an insightful analysis of key issues that will affect this market in the future. This study will help to answer questions such as:

  • How are the PLC-based PACs and DCSbased PACs, which are being deployed at an increasing rate, affecting the HMI software requirements?
  • With businesses focusing on sustainable manufacturing initiatives, how will the resulting drivers affect the future HMI software market demands?
  • What will change in the HMI software market due to 64-bit computing technologies and new operating systems such as Microsoft Vista/Server 2008?
  • Do manufacturers feel that there are sufficient tools available to perform simple HMI software migration tasks?
