Impact of Global PLM Trends on Manufacturers in India
Keywords: Automation and IT Solutions, Operational Excellence, Orlando Forum, PLM.
One session at the recent ARC World Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida focused on the technology and industry trends that drive today's PLM market. In his introductory comments, Dick Slansky, ARC Senior Analyst for PLM and Discrete Manufacturing, defined PLM as a strategic business approach that integrates products, processes, people, and information across the global enterprise. PLM is much more than a technology and design/build solution; it supports and enables the extended global enterprise, provides a collaborative platform for innovation (both internal and external to enterprise) spans the total product, process, and production lifecycle from concept to end-of-life.
Business drivers and technology challenges that define the PLM landscape and directions include: managing extended product lifecycle domains from product design to factory-floor operations, global collaboration for design/build/operate/maintain, and managing extended supply chains and outsourced engineering and operations. Innovation across product, process, and production is another important business driver for the PLM market. For example, demand for alternate energy generation and adopting sustainable product design and manufacturing processes drive PLM applications, including implementation of the 3D virtual lifecycle.
These drivers are particularly applicable in emerging markets, such as India.
