Fieldbus Users Realize Upfront Benefits During Design and Implementation Phase
Keywords: Fieldbus, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Profibus PA, Networks, Interoperability, Migration.
ARC Advisory Group recently conducted a survey in conjunction with the Fieldbus Foundation to learn from owner/operators about their perceptions and experiences with fieldbus technology. A large number of end users responded, nearly all have some kind of fieldbus system installed at their sites. While conventional wisdom holds that fieldbus technology is better suited for greenfield applications, a sizeable proportion of survey respondents indicated that they implemented fieldbus in conjunction with modernization and migration initiatives.
The survey covered both implementation and operational aspects of fieldbus technology. In this insight, we cover the implementation phase, addressing why owner/operators choose fieldbus solutions for their plants and why some are still hesitant to embrace the technology. In a future installment, we will explore the operational and maintenance aspects, to get a better sense of how fieldbus is being used after the installation and commissioning are done.
Implementation Benefits of Process Fieldbuses
Last fall, ARC performed a survey to gain further insights into current fieldbus usage levels, purchase criteria, what users hoped to gain by implementing fieldbus technology, and finally, the outcomes of fieldbus projects. Just over a hundred individuals responded to the survey, which ran from September 2012 through March 2013.
