Operator Training Simulator Helps Salt River Project Maximize Human Assets

Keywords: Operator Training Simulators, OTS, Millennials, New Generation Work-force, Invensys, Salt River Project, SRP, Coronado Generating Station, CGS.

As discussed at a session at ARC Advisory Group's recent 2013 World Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida, operator training simulators (OTS) provide one of the most effective ways to both train new operators and update the skills of experienced operators. This can help today's industrial organizations meet the multiple challenges associated with the impending skills shortage, as experienced Baby Boomers retire and are replaced by a new generation of less-experienced Millennials.

The many excellent questions forum participants asked during the session's panel discussion provide one indicator of the increasing interest in OTS among manufacturers and owner-operators to help meet challenges, such as:

  • Impending retirement of experienced workers who will be replaced with younger, less experienced workers
  • Increasing government regulations and shareholder pressure to maintain safe, environmentally compliant operations
  • Increasing competitiveness due to globalization, eroding prices, and shrinking operating margins
  • Accelerating technology curve
  • Need to upgrade/replace many legacy systems and applications
