Lloyd Colegrove, Director of Fundamental Problem Solving, Statistics and Modeling at Dow Chemical Company recently gave a presentation at an ARC event on how the company uses enterprise manufacturing intelligence (EMI) technology to convert massive amounts of plant and other data into knowledge.
Dow looks at more than just the plant data; the company wants to find ways to integrate, contextualize, and utilize information from both the manufacturing processes and technical documents and use this data to improve decision making.
The company's vision is to be able to easily integrate, access, and analyze its data to enable it to run its plants flawlessly and in a stable manner. The company wants to know immediately when its plants are not operating in what it considers to be the "perfect state." It also wants the ability to collaborate better, both within plants and across the enterprise, especially when things are not going exactly as planned. Thanks to an ongoing project implemented in conjunction with technology supplier, Northwest Analytics, these goals have largely been achieved.
