Trends, Drivers, and Automation Strategies in CPG Manufacturing Operations

Keywords: Consumer Packaged Goods, Food Products, Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Household Care Products, Personal Care Products.

CPG Industry Overview
The consumer packaged goods (CPG) industries, as defined by ARC Advisory Group, consist of the following four segments.

  • Fresh, frozen, and prepared food products
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Household care products such as air fresheners, bleach, dishwash-ing detergents, insecticides, laundry products, polishes, and surface care products
  • Personal care products such as toiletries and grooming products, such as perfumes, shampoos, skin lotions, and shaving cream, as well as lipstick, mascara, and other cosmetics

Combined, these industries produce about US$ 4.5 trillion worth of product annually. The two major CPG segments, food and beverages and home and personal products, are noteworthy for their differences. For example, the top 50 food and beverage companies control less than 20 percent of the market, while the top 50 home and personal care companies account for about 85 percent of the market. The food and beverage industry is very global, while the US, EU, UK, Brazil and Russia dominate the home and personal care market. Food and beverage products are ingestible products, while home and personal care products generally are not.

CPG companies are focused on creating, strengthening, and protecting large global brands and expanding distribution channels, particularly in the emerging economies. To understand the enormity and complexity of strengthening and managing a company's brands and supply chains one need only look at a Unilever statement that over 150 million times a day, in 150 countries, people use a Unilever product at key moments of their day. With limited growth in the developed economies of the US and Europe, companies are placing more emphasis on emerging economies that are experiencing swift increases in disposable income/purchasing power.
