Control System Strategies to Achieve Operational Excellence

Keywords: Control System Design, DCS, Efficiency, Losses, Operational Excellence, Value Addition.

The overall economic scenario and domestic headwinds are constraining the growth of India's manufacturing sector. The HSBC/Markit purchasing managers index (PMI) for the country's manufacturing sector was 48.5 in August 2013, down from 50.1 in July, indicating a contraction. ARC Advisory Group believes that this sends the signal that India's manufacturing industry must scale up rapidly and become globally competitive by deploying new technologies to streamline processes and enhance productivity.

In the current business climate, manufacturing companies in India and elsewhere around the world are under tremendous pressure to efficiently deploy their resources, cut costs, and maintain quality standards at every level to remain sustainable. ARC's recent India forum focused on all these aspects and highlighted some global trends in the manufacturing sector.

One of the key sessions was on control strategies and operational excellence. This session was led by BHEL, an integrated power plant equipment manufacturer and one of the largest engineering and manufacturing companies in India, whose representatives spoke about control strategies in the power plant. Following the BHEL presentation, National Aluminum Company Limited's (NALCO) representatives presented on general strategies to achieve operational excellence.
