Information Security Vital in Today's Business Scenario

Keywords: Information Security, International Organization for Standardization, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27002, Information Security Management System, ISMS.

ARC Advisory Group's recent India Forum was structured to capture contemporary technologies and trends. One such trend is Information Security. The session by M. V. Padmanabhayya, the Government's Director of Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC), was well received by all delegates. The presentation centered on the value proposition of protecting information and treating it like an asset.

ARC's ongoing research into the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) indicates that we're seeing an exponential increase in both the number and variety of data-generating and information-collecting devices (intelligent devices, sensors, mobile devices) and networks (wired and wireless). In this environment, Mr. Padmanabhayya stressed that security of information is critical for business continuity and delivery of services. Internal threats to information security from disgruntled employees or external sources must be addressed with basic techniques such as locking USB and Ethernet ports and implementing specialized software for monitoring traffic on plant control and information networks. According to Mr. Padmanabhayya, another option is to implement information security management systems (ISMS) to help protect information.

Mr. Padmanabhayya's recommendation is to protect information all across its lifecycle — right from the time information is created, stored, transmitted, and either processed or destroyed.
