India, being among the world's fastest growing economies, offers excellent opportunities for companies to expand their base. The country's manufacturing industries have shown excellent performance in the past and the future seems promising. However, the contribution of India's manufacturing sector to the GDP remains at a low point of about 15 percent. As per the national manufacturing policy (NMP), plans are afoot to increase the manufacturing sector's contribution to GDP to 25 percent; but this will be an uphill task as this sector is currently experiencing a slowdown.
The purchasing manager's index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector in India indicates contraction in recent months. While this may be a short-term situation, to ensure long term sustainability and growth, domestic companies need to focus on achieving manufacturing excellence by adopting state-of-the-art automation and enterprise technologies.
At ARC Advisory Group's recent India Forum, industry thought leaders explained how industries in India and elsewhere can achieve manufacturing excellence with the adoption of advanced automation and IT technologies, citing global trends in the manufacturing sector.
