Robotic Technologies Benefit Subsea Industries

Keywords: Energy, Offshore Oil, Offshore Gas, Offshore Exploration, Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), Subsea Drilling.

Executive Overview
The projected increase in global demand for energy, particularly in developing nations, combined with the abatement of more easily accessed energy sources, has created substantial interest in offshore oil and gas reserves. With major reserves located in the North Sea; Gulf of Mexico; and off the coasts of South America, West Africa, and Southeast Asia, exploration and production activities face challenges related to the often harsh and remote operating environments. New regulatory pressures compound these challenges.

Offshore exploration and production facilities (fixed or floating) not only require huge upfront capital investments, but staffing these with qualified personnel also represents a costly logistical challenge (particularly since offshore personnel often demand high compensation packages). In response, many companies are moving their entire production operations subsea.

Industry experts expect the shift to subsea operations in the oil & gas industry to improve the economics of offshore energy extraction for E&P companies. Increased subsea operations could also create a vast array of opportunities for automation suppliers, machinery builders, and service specialists as technology that can withstand the rigors of sustained underwater operation will be required. Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) are one technology supporting this initiative.

UUVs are underwater robots that are either operated remotely via tether or carry out missions autonomously, without the need for a human operator. UUVs are invaluable for many subsea drilling and production operations. This ARC Advisory Service report discusses the applicability of these highly specialized vehicles within the oil & gas and other subsea industries and provides an overview of the market dynamics and direction.
