Rockwell Automation and its PartnerNetwork hosted Rockwell Automation on the Move (RAOTM) in Mumbai end January.  The PartnerNetwork is comprised of an integrated team of engineering specialists and suppliers working collaboratively with RA to resolve manufacturing and automation challenges.  The driving values of this network are: simplify, collaborate, and innovate. Like its global versions, this event also generated a positive response, with over 1,100 “footfalls.” The two Executive Forums, technical sessions and hands-on labs were run in four parallel tracks; RA and its PartnerNetwork had about 30 exhibit booths.  G. Ganapathiraman, Vice President and General Manager, ARC Advisory Group India, was invited to speak at the Executive Forum.  He deliberated on the evolving technology trends impacting the manufacturing sector.

Dilip Sawhney, Managing Director, Rockwell Automation, India spoke about Integrated Architecture (IA), and how the company’s solutions seamlessly blend IT and OT. He also talked about modern DCS using standard COTS, hardware and software, and RA's strength in and ability to offer MES for both discrete and process industries. Further, he spoke about mobility and FactoryTalk TeamONE – a new product that converts a mobile device into a smart node.  Other session topics include:

  • E+H: Heartbeat technology that leads to safety, quality, and availability. It helps the customer with better diagnostics, verification, and lifecycle monitoring
  • HPCL: Rockwell solutions implemented in its diesel hydro treater plant
  • Tecnimont Pvt. Ltd: Experiences related to end users, EPCs, and future trends
  • Rockwell Automation: PlantPAx DCS, intelligent MCC, and advanced process control

The event is designed to help enable manufacturers and OEMs to best leverage their automation investments to achieve their business objectives. Process industries -- both global and domestic --encounter challenges from multiple fronts, such as vacillating customer demands, cost control pressures, and regulatory compliance issues. It has now become mandatory for every production facility to have a real-time information system with key performance indicator (KPI) reports customized as per requirement. The presentations made it clear that investment in process automation technologies will benefit all stakeholders. Process automation should not be a “one size fits all” solution; but scalable, flexible, and easy to integrate.

Smart manufacturing begins with The Connected Enterprise, which is the gateway to digital transformation.  According to Rockwell Automation, The Connected Enterprise, “is a highly connected, knowledge-enabled industrial enterprise where devices and processes are connected, monitored and optimized to enhance productivity, safety and security, sustainability and economic performance.” This theme was backed up in many presentations by demonstrating a portfolio of connected services (remote monitoring, cloud analytics, network and security services) and case studies. Many of these case studies prove that connectivity can drive efficiency and increases business value. Central to success is IT-OT collaboration. The Connected Enterprise helps manufacturers capitalize on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) as it converges plant and enterprise networks and connects people, processes, and technologies. This can be introduced in a phased manner by leveraging existing automation assets and preparing the ground for next-gen technologies and innovations.
