Device level platforms have emerged as one of the architectural linchpins of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).  These platforms sit at low levels of the IIoT architectural hierarchy, connecting and managing end devices and gateways and delivering the two-way data streams that enable business benefits.

As interest in the IIoT continues to increase, the supply side of the device level IIoT platform market remains in flux, particularly from the perspectives of merger & acquisition activity and the large number of horizontal offerings looking to serve this market.  ARC Advisory Group's recent update of our coverage in this area unearthed companies ranging from straightforward IIoT platform suppliers to horizontal M2M connectivity providers to legacy industrial SCADA players targeting their solutions at this space.  These players and other horizontal platform providers face significant investment in migrating their solutions to match emerging IIoT architectures.

M2M and industrial SCADA both emphasize remote connectivity to numerous devices, similar to IIoT functionality, but in many cases the architectures of these solutions do not match that of the emerging IIoT or the software industry as a whole.  M2M and SCADA suppliers, as well as other market hopefuls, need to migrate their solutions to the architectures, pricing models, and vertical features necessary to win over the leading emerging customers for device level IIoT platforms.
