ARC Report Abstract

Executive Overview
This ARC Advisory Services report is intended to help mining companies develop a strategy to leverage the emerging Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to better manage their assets using sources of information never considered before. IIoT is spawning a new era across industry by helping transform mining operations into modern digital enterprises to capture and analyze previously untapped asset and production data and break down the existing silos.

Transforming the mine into a digital enterprise can create synergies that rely upon leveraging complex analytics, predictive analytics, complex event processing, cloud computing, mobility, RFID tracking, autonomous systems, virtualization, and 3D visualization. IIoT is a conceptual framework for transforming the mine by helping identify new associations for improved decision support. Cyber-physical systems, machines, and dedicated sensors will enable autonomous decision making along with the capability to perform localized signal processing.

Industry in Transformation
While this report focuses on mining operations, IIoT spans the entire value chain of mining equipment suppliers, many that can offer products with value-adding, IIoT-enabled services. Capabilities incorporated into mobile equipment by companies such as Komatsu, Caterpillar, and Joy Global already help demonstrate where IIoT can take the mining industry. However, this is only the beginning as mines need to reach further into the operations to operate more like a factory.

To enable this transformation, a broad range of technologies widely deployed in brick-and-mortar factory operations are now finding their way into mining operations. Technologies that are successful and well proven in controlled factory environments are being deployed in the far more challenging environments of the mining industry. However, the highly specialized requirements for equipment in mining, which need to be ad-dressed, include explosive environments, extreme temperatures, constantly moving locations, and remote operations.
