Project Success Story

Client’s Background and Requirement: The client is a leading global construction and mining equipment manufacturer with its operations across various continents. The client aimed to be at the forefront of innovation by designing, developing, and launching a new range of electric construction LTTSand mining equipment. The role and purpose of off-highway equipment differ significantly from that of standard commercial or passenger vehicles, particularly in terms of power needs. While a passenger vehicle's power range is up to 600V, the construction and mining equipment range could be 600V to 2800V as the latter are used for operations and demanding tasks including excavation, lifting, hauling material, and drilling; and to perform these operations effectively, equipment requires high power to ensure optimal performance and productivity. With its extensive experience and expertise, L&T Technology Services (LTTS) was chosen as the preferred partner.

LTTS’ Approach and Solution: LTTS devised a comprehensive solution strategy. The team conducted research on existing “equipment/vehicle high voltage and power architecture designs” across various industry applications, including automotive, commercial vehicle, marine, rail, industrial, and aerospace. Findings from the research were analyzed to understand the technologies used, implementation and integration of e-powertrain components, operational efficiency, performance matrix, and high voltage/power requirements.

Architecture design, development, and analysis

  • Conducted in-depth analysis of the requirements and defined e-powertrain specifications according to end-consumer needs.

  • Designed and developed the e-powertrain high voltage architecture in alignment with defined specifications and parameters to achieve optimal efficiency and performance.

  • Developed MBSE mathematical models to study configuration design and effects on various parameters and performed analysis.

  • Based on simulation studies, defined the control strategy and converter topology, performance, component selection, and sizing & weight.

The LTTS Edge: LTTS, with its decade long, multi-domain expertise in designing high-voltage architectures, provided the following to its customer:

  • Robust MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) expertise for comprehensive configuration design and performance optimization.

  • Reusable simulation models, enabling cost-effective and rapid deployment.

Tangible Benefits: LTTS developed an e-powertrain platform with a power range of 600V to 2800V, ensuring efficient, seamless performance for off-highway vehicles and equipment across multiple on-ground applications. The platform was designed to be modular and scalable, allowing easy expansion and adaptation to different equipment or applications. This resulted in the reduction of development efforts, time, and cost.
