Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, recently concluded a significant tour across Southeast Asia, covering Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Notably, this visit marked Huang's first trip to both Malaysia and Vietnam, and his return to Singapore after 25 years. During this tour, Huang expressed strong confidence in Southeast Asia becoming a pivotal technology hub, citing the region's strength in various aspects of the technology supply chain, including packaging, assembly, battery manufacturing, and Southeast Asia's AI Advancement.
Singapore: Nurturing AI Talent Pool
Jensen planned to meet with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and executives at the Economic Development Board (EDB) to explore potential investments in the country. While the specific details of these investments are currently unclear, they could potentially involve the construction of a larger supercomputer and the establishment of an 'iconic AI site' in Singapore.
The proposed "iconic site" aligns with Singapore's recently updated National AI Strategy (NAIS 2.0), aiming to leverage AI for societal benefits over the next three to five years. This envisioned space aims to foster and expand the targeted pool of 15,000 AI talents that Singapore aims to cultivate within this timeframe.
Notably, Singapore also ranked 10th globally for the number of contributions its coders made to generative AI projects on Github.
Huang's Perspective on Singapore as an AI Development Hub
During an interview, Jensen emphasized Singapore's robust research community and vibrant startup ecosystem as pivotal factors for developing foundational models in generative AI. He highlighted the necessity of a custom-built model tailored to the region's diverse cultures and multitude of languages. Jensen mentioned Nvidia's collaboration with Singapore in developing the open-source model, the "Sea-Lion" (SouthEast Asian Languages in One Network model), trained in 11 languages in the region.
A new initiative by the Singapore government is underway to further develop "Sea-Lion" into a multimodal speech-text model, enabling users to understand the context and values related to Southeast Asia's diverse cultures and languages.

Malaysia: Emerging as an AI Manufacturing Hub
Jensen met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and industry leaders in Malaysia to discuss technological advancements within the nation, along with meetings with data center and infrastructure partners.
He praised Malaysia's achievements in establishing robust data center infrastructure and highlighted the evolving role of AI data centers beyond conventional facilities. Emphasizing AI's capability to derive substantial value from raw data, Huang believes that Malaysia’s manufacturing prowess, coupled with Nvidia’s data center technology expertise, could position the country as a significant hub for AI manufacturing.
To propel Malaysia into the top 20 countries in AI, Jensen agreed to assist in developing the AI ecosystem by supporting the establishment of excellence centers for AI learning and research and creating Malaysia's AI Cloud system.
YTL Power International Berhad (YTL) recently unveiled its collaboration with Nvidia to pioneer AI infrastructure, aiming to introduce the fastest supercomputers to Malaysia. Valued at $4.3 billion, this partnership focuses on nurturing advanced AI capabilities within YTL's data center park in Kulai, Johor. The first phase is expected to be operational by mid-2024, reinforcing Malaysia's position in AI advancement and cloud computing.
Vietnam: A Potential Chip Production Base
Jensen engaged with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and local technology leaders to explore collaborative agreements in the semiconductor sector.
Nvidia has already invested $250 million in Vietnam, focusing on cloud computing, healthcare, and automotive industries. Huang expressed a keen interest in strengthening business ties with the Vietnamese government and technology firms. Nvidia aims to establish chip production facilities in Vietnam, expanding its manufacturing scope beyond Taiwan.
Vietnam boasts numerous chip assembly companies, and recent investments in the country's electrical and electronics industries set the stage for Nvidia's upcoming investments, diversifying Vietnam's semiconductor sector and reinforcing its significant position in the global semiconductor supply chain in the region.
