A half-day workshop at the 2015 ARC Industry Forum in Orlando on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) included discussions on three initiatives: Industrie 4.0, the Industrial Internet Consortium, and the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition. In the first part, Dr. Reinhold Achatz, member of the steering committee of "Platform Industrie 4.0," presented the organization's vision. As the responsible individual for sustainable innovation at ThyssenKrupp, he subsequently presented a view on Industrie 4.0 from the perspective of a vertically integrated company with both process and discrete manufacturing activities.
Evolving Vision for Industrie 4.0
Dr. Achatz explained that the term Industrie 4.0 was coined in a report by acatech, the German national academy of science and engineering; and Forschungsunion, an organization promoting combined research in science and economics to support Germany's high-tech strategy. The German government commissioned the report.
The term comes from an analysis of successive industrial revolutions. Dr. Achatz mentioned:
- Mechanization
- Mass production
- Automation and the use of robots
- Improved organization and control of the value chain across the product lifecycle
