11/2023 DTC Global: Cyber Informed Engineering in the Age of Digital Transformation and Sustainability
As end users embark on their digital transformation journeys, cybersecurity is all too often an add-on or an afterthought. The truth is, it is much easier to build cybersecurity and security controls into a system during the engineering phase of a project than it is to add on cybersecurity after the system is implemented. Ensuring security in system engineering is particularly important for users implementing the complex suite of new technologies that go along with digital transformation, including cloud and edge computing, IoT networks, and complex connections to third party partners. Idaho National Labs developed the concept of Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) sponsored by DOE-CESER, to address these issues in the power industry and has expanded this concept to the world of manufacturing in general. In the power industry, for example, the increasingly large installed base of geographically dispersed power assets such as wind and solar farms requires a more engineered approach to cybersecurity. Assets such as large power transformers, intelligent pumps, and compressors can present supply chain security challenges as well. Find out how you can apply CIE to your processes and strengthen your "secure by design" posture, while making the most of your cybersecurity resources and personnel.
