Sparkplug: A Building Block for Plug & Play IIoT

Sparkplug is an open specification at the Eclipse Foundation. It implements a protocol that provides operations with valuable data while fulfilling the security requirements of IT. Sparkplug is built on the proven open-source MQTT protocol and facilitates plug-and-play Industrial IoT solutions.

The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is a partnership between leading manufacturing research and innovation centers and private companies. AMRC specializes in research into advanced machining, manufacturing, and materials, which is of practical use to industry and the 125 AMRC industrial partners ranging from global giants like Boeing, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, and Airbus to small companies. The AMRC has recently released Factory+, an open framework that defines how to deploy Sparkplug in a manufacturing environment using modern technologies and best practices.

In this session, Alex Godbehere from AMRC will describe how Factory+ leverages Sparkplug, and his colleagues will detail the Factory+ roadmap. Todd Anslinger from Chevron will then explain the significance and benefits of Sparkplug to end-users. Finally, a panel of members from the Sparkplug community will discuss various aspects of the technology and its implementation.
