Industrial Data Fabric Archetypes refer to the distinct strategic patterns or architectural blueprints that organizations adopt when assembling their IDF, based on their specific business drivers, legacy technology stacks, and primary user personas. ARC Advisory Group identifies six primary archetypes: Application-Centric, Asset-Centric, Edge-Centric, Industrial DataOps-Centric, Data Science-Centric, and IT/Enterprise-Centric.
The concept of "archetypes" is essential for navigating the vendor landscape. Different vendors approach the IDF from different starting points, and misaligning the vendor's strength with the organization's primary need is a common cause of failure in digital transformation projects.
Application-Centric: This archetype is driven by the immediate need to support a specific suite of SaaS applications, such as a turnkey predictive maintenance solution or a connected worker platform. The fabric is often "invisible," embedded within the application provider's stack. While this offers speed-to-value, it risks creating new data silos if the application does not expose its data model openly.
Asset-Centric: Championed by OEMs and asset-intensive industries (e.g., oil and gas, utilities), this archetype organizes data around the physical asset hierarchy (ISO 14224). The primary goal is to create a "digital twin" of the asset's lifecycle, from design (ET) to operation (OT) to maintenance.
Edge-Centric: In scenarios with intermittent connectivity or extreme latency requirements (e.g., remote mining, high-speed packaging), the fabric must live primarily at the edge. This archetype prioritizes data reduction, local processing, and "store-and-forward" capabilities. Vendors in this space focus on lightweight protocols and hardware-agnostic connectivity.
Industrial DataOps-Centric: This is the domain of the "plumbers" of the industrial internet. It focuses purely on the pipeline—the engineering workflow of connecting to a PLC, normalizing the data, modeling it, and publishing it. It is agnostic to the destination application. This archetype is critical for organizations building a "Unified Namespace" (UNS).
Data Science-Centric: Designed for the "builders" of AI. This archetype prioritizes access to massive volumes of raw, historical data for model training. It integrates deeply with notebook environments (Jupyter) and MLOps platforms. The focus is on high-throughput ingestion and flexible schema-on-read.
IT/Enterprise-Centric: Often driven by the CIO or CDO, this archetype treats industrial data as just another domain within the corporate data estate. It leverages hyperscaler technologies (like Microsoft Fabric or AWS Industrial Data Fabric) to integrate OT data with financial, supply chain, and customer data in a centralized lakehouse.
