ARC Forum Workshop Focuses on Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition

A half-day workshop at the recent 2015 ARC Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) included discussions on three related initiatives: Industrie 4.0, the Industrial Internet Consortium, and the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition. In the latter discussion, Denise Swink, CEO of the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC), and other stakeholders provided updates on different SMLC initiatives.

SMLC's Vision and Growth
The SMLC was formed in the mid-2000s to help revitalize the oil & gas, process, and hybrid manufacturing industrial sectors in the US. The Coalition's vision is to improve manufacturing competitiveness and sustainability in a manner that individual members would not be able to realize on their own.

To this end, the SMLC is developing common open architectures and infrastructures for more intelligent, effective, and efficient research & development, design, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. The general thinking is that faster access to more data and improved usage of those data (such as through advanced modeling) should result in better decisions. This, in turn, should lead to improvements in both efficiency and costs, and safer, more sustainable operations. As with Industrie 4.0 and the Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT), SMLC efforts include the merging of the physical and virtual worlds, such as using cyber-physical systems to enable innovation and performance improvements.
