Project Success Story

Client and Challenge: The client, a leading Tier 1 supplier based in Japan, faced a complex challenge impacting both efficiency and profitability. Their material testing process had become costly, driven by the need to meet strict global standards and regularly benchmark raw materials. These tasks were further hindered by a lack of a centralized database, limiting global access to critical data and obstructing collaboration, tracking, and strategic planning. To overcome this, they required an LTTSengineering partner to streamline testing and implement a centralized, cost-effective solution that would improve efficiency, data access, and decision making. LTTS (L&T Technology Services) was onboarded as the preferred partner.

LTTS’ Solution: The LTTS team were tasked with facilitating material testing, benchmarking, and inspection activities for a global audience and manufacturing sites. Their comprehensive solution included:

Specimen Preparation: LTTS prepared an in-house Injection Molding Shop (IMS) where test specimens were made in compliance with ISO/ASTM standards.

Exhaustive Plastic Material Testing: The team conducted extensive Mechanical Tests (Tensile, Flexural, Notched Izod & Charpy Impact), Rheological Tests (Melt Flow Rate), Thermal Tests (HDT, Heat ageing resistance), and Analytical Testing (Ash content), providing a thorough analysis of the materials.

Material Benchmarking: LTTS conducted an in-depth study to analyze different known and unknown material properties against pre-set values, providing valuable insights for strategic planning.

Centralized Database: Recognizing the need for easy, global access to data, LTTS set up a client-specific central database, where all tested data could be easily accessed from any part of the world.

Business Value and Outcome: Implementing LTTS’ streamlined material testing process significantly improved the client’s productivity. This not only boosted operational efficiency but also enhanced the client’s ability to meet market demand, increasing customer satisfaction and opening new business opportunities. Benefits included:

  • Flexibility in test slot booking and customized test set up

  • 60 percent reduction in material testing lead time

  • Annual cost savings of 50 percent

  • Support for product circularity to achieve sustainability goals

Adherence to ISO standards ensured high-quality, reliable results, while a centralized database enabled seamless data access across global teams enabling real-time informed decisions. Additionally, LTTS’ support in root cause analysis empowered the client with actionable insights, enhancing problem-solving capabilities and operational resilience during peak loads. This project underscored the value of continuous improvement and positioned the client for sustained competitiveness.
