LTTS Deploys IoT-based Smart Street Lighting

Client and Industry: A multinational lighting corporation, sought to develop a robust, secure, and end to-end IoT-based smart street lighting solution.  What was required was a next-generation sensor node for outdoor lighting applications. LTTS (L&T Technology Services), with its proven expertise and years of experience, was the chosen partner for this project.

What is a Smart Lighting System? 

A smart embedded system manages streetlights by sensing vehicles, pedestrians, and other roadway obstructions. An IoT-enabled Smart Lighting System (SLS) combines centralized monitoring with distributed control, using standard IoT communication protocols. Sensors in each light node automatically adjust lighting based on ambient brightness and human activity, reducing energy waste. Using inputs such as motion, light, and sensors, the system optimizes on/off schedules and lowers operating costs by quickly detecting and addressing faults.

Challenge and Proposition: The portfolio consists of electric lights and the IoT platform and connected lighting systems aimed at consumers and professionals. LTTS had to design and develop a sensor node to collect sensor data, process it and push it to a IoT-connected backend device. Mobile apps or cloud-based lighting control had to be based on sensor data. 

LTTS AlgorithmLTTS’ Solution: The solution enabled the seamless integration of multiple sensors (noise, temperature, tilt, vibration, acceleration, and light) within a single enclosure, eliminating interference and ensuring accurate data collection and performance with high range of -45 degrees C to 70 degrees C. LTTS also enabled:

  • Robust BLE and DALI communication for reliable and consistent data transmission, enhancing connectivity and control across the lighting network. 

  • Mobile app-based connection and pole-to-pole communication based on BLE Mesh.

  • Product designed for IP66 & IK09 environment.

LTTS developed a scalable, high-availability and secure solution with next-gen energy-saving functionalities, such as calendars, manual overrides, and photocell synchronization for optimizing energy and operational cost. Advanced algorithms enabled 60 percent reduction in energy consumption.

The LTTS Edge: LTTS developed more than just the technology, it helped the client reduce cost and enhance efficiency.   

  • Proprietary DALI stack developed for customer ownership and use in future products. 

  • Speed detection algorithm to enable speed filter on pedestrians, bicycles and motor vehicles movement. 

  • Complex algorithm for digital noise data and light sensor data pre-processing.
