Client Profile: Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG is a local utility company. The company operates in the fields of electricity, natural gas, drinking water, and district heating. The biggest shareholder of this company is an energy company, EnBW.
Business Need: In 2012, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG ordered the turnkey erection of its Lausward unit "Fortuna" combined cycle power plant (CCPP) with district heat extraction. The company was looking to upgrade their power plant and was considering various models. This plant supplies local energy for a major city. Hence, the company wanted to find an efficient turbine solution that would be easy to maintain with a rapid start-up and shut down feature. It needed a comprehensive and cohesive model that would protect the climate. The company was also looking for reliable supply and location security. It wanted a decentralized and embedded system.
Solution Implementation: The company decided to work with Siemens to achieve the desired results. A team of 750 people worked on this project to develop the gas turbine - SGT5-8000H. This was the foundation of the power plant. The next challenge involved transporting it from Berlin to Düsseldorf. This was also accomplished and it was set up for business successfully. The plant was designed using some of the advanced offerings by Siemens. It was a combination of gas turbine, a steam turbine, and additional waste heat recovery. Thus, the electrical and fuel efficiency of the power plant was very high. It reached a full output in less than 25 minutes after powering on. This has made the power plant more efficient to meet the demands of the city. With the solution, the company could provide sustainable energy supply and district heating for Düsseldorf. The time schedule and financial guidelines were all as agreed upon. The power plant also set three world records: Electrical output is over 600 megawatts, it delivers 300 megawatts of district heating with one plant; electrical efficiency is around 61.5 percent; and the overall fuel efficiency is 85 percent.
Achievements: This reduced the CO2 emissions and enhanced renewable energy production sites. The Fortuna unit enabled Düsseldorf towards reaching the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. The plant saves approximately 2.5 million tons of CO2 each year. This is the same as the amount emitted by 1.25 million passenger cars, assuming each is driving 15,000 kilometers. The plant also reduced noise exposure and currently people living on either side of the Rhine cannot hear the power plant.
