Need for Clean and Reliable Power Will Drive Industrial UPS Market

The global industrial uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market will be driven largely by need for clean and reliable power supply.   Orders for the industrial UPS market in 2014 grew marginally compared to 2013.  This slowdown was mainly due to falling oil prices, slowdown in CapEx investments, the strong US dollar, weaker euro and Japanese Yen, and the economic slowdown in overall Asia.  According to a new ARC Advisory Group study, the global market for industrial UPS is expected to grow marginally in the first half of the forecast period (2014-2019) and strongly rebound in the second half.

“The major market macroeconomic and other drivers identified were: need for improvements in power quality; increasing consumption of electricity; growth in infrastructural development in emerging economies; increase in machine critical applications across various industries; and Ethernet-based connections.  “The global demand for energy is increasing at a solid pace, fueled by the demand in emerging economies and growth in the overall global economy.  This raises demand for clean and reliable power, boosting the industrial UPS market,” according to Research Director Sal Spada, co-author of ARC’s new “Industrial Uninterruptible Power Supply Global Market Research Study”.

Increased Demand from New Market Segments
Traditionally, the heavy process industries have dominated the market for industrial UPS, since power failures in these plants can result in a major industrial disaster.   However, the threat of lost production or the possibility of damage to work-in-process now also drives growth for industrial UPS equipment in the discrete and hybrid manufacturing industries.

Hybrid and discrete manufacturers often consider UPS as an afterthought.  This is beginning to change as manufacturers quantify losses associated with power quality factors in their production operations.  Suppliers are preparing themselves for a future manufacturing market characterized by greater concern for power quality, production uptime, and controlled shutdown. 

Internet-Connected Intelligent Devices
The underlying value proposition of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) hinges upon improving the operational performance of manufacturing assets.  By providing frictionless access to data from sensors, production equipment, and remote assets, IIoT supports new methods to help maximize the potential of manufacturing systems.  As increasingly more industrial UPSs become connected to the IIoT ecosystem, suppliers will be able to offer new, innovative monitoring and support services, while manufactures can leverage the UPS as another sensor to identify power quality issues that could impact manufacturing systems. 

Emerging Economies Will Drive Industrial UPS Market
According to the ARC study, increasing demand for energy, clean water, consumer products, automobiles, food and beverage, semiconductors, and electronic products from a rapidly growing middle class in the emerging economies, combined with increased infrastructure requirements such as railways/metros and others will further drive growth in the industrial UPS market.
