The continued emphasis on plant asset management (PAM) and fieldbus technology is a growth enabler for smart pressure transmitters and other smart field devices.  Manufacturers have begun to realize the cost saving benefits of implementing HART and digital protocol standards to enable PAM solutions, particularly in the maintenance and operation phase of the asset’s lifecycle.  End users are looking to reduce maintenance cost and increase production availability using tools, such as predictive diagnostics and software-based configuration solutions.  Fieldbus adoption is creating significant opportunity for pressure transmitter suppliers.  New fieldbus-enabled DCS systems must be deployed with appropriate smart transmitters to enable diagnostics and field device health monitoring, thus underscoring the importance of smart transmitters.  This asset management focus of users is leading to increased adoption of digital communication protocols and fueling demand for smart transmitters. 

Increased Implementation of Advanced Technologies
Keeping the end user requirements in mind, suppliers continue to add enhancements and functional capabilities to their pressure transmitter offerings.  Owner-operators are looking for technologies that are easier to install and maintain.  Wireless technology allows users to easily install field devices in the plant.  This, in turn, helps users justify replacing their older conventional pressure transmitters with smart wireless transmitters/devices.  Suppliers are collaborating with users and wireless standards bodies, such as ISA100 and the Wireless HART initiative, to develop standards-based wireless pressure transmitters that fulfill user needs and expectations.  ARC also sees increasing acceptance of multivariable pressure transmitters.  Although expensive compared to traditional pressure transmitters, multivariable transmitters measure two process variables; this helps users save on installation as well as maintenance costs
