Soft Starter is a component used to operate and protect induction motors along with the mechanical system. Soft starters play an important role in industrial applications that use induction motors because it is a relatively low cost method for protecting mechanical systems from high instantaneous torque and associated electrical systems from high inrush currents. Soft starters have been an instrumental in manufacturing operations for fixed speed applications to reduce peak starting torque, motor inrush currents, and mechanical shocks. Soft starters are limited to fixed speed applications which accounts for a significant portion of the applications for induction motors. However, when the application is variable speed or power factor is an important factor, then an AC Drive is higher performance solution albeit at a higher cost. Soft Starters Advances in technology continue to bring soft starters to a new level of sophistication, but they are still relegated to fixed speed applications. In many installations manufacturers are still operating induction motors with direct on line starters in fixed speed applications exposing mechanical equipment high accelerations and limiting potential energy savings available with either soft starter or AC Drive. In the direct on line applications the soft starter is an excellent alternative to achieve energy savings. Energy savings can be realized by using a soft starter, achieving between 99.5 to 99.9 percent efficiency. Efficiency depends on the size of the soft starter and the three-phase voltage applied. After the starting process is complete, a soft starter with an integrated bypass pulls in an internal contactor. The silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) are no longer firing and current flows through the contactor. ARC Advisory Group has just published a new comprehensive global market research study on Soft Starters . This ARC Soft Starter market study discusses current market performance and related technology and business trends, profiles leading technology suppliers, and provides five-year global industry and regional forecasts from 2015-2020 for the Soft Starters market. Growth in the market for soft starters depends heavily on growth in the automation market in general and the market for electric motors and drives in particular. ARC is optimistic about the growth of soft starters’ business in coming years. Asia has become the largest market for soft starters, driven by the ongoing manufacturing boom, followed by Europe and North America. Part of this growth is due to greater use of automation to replace manual workers as labor costs rise. In addition, manufacturers and other industrial organizations around the world are investing more to protect expensive assets like electrical equipment and machinery from damage. The market for soft starters is an established and stable market. Market growth will be affected by normal business cycles and specific industry and regional developments. The need for soft starters depends on the presence of other automation equipment and electric motors.
