The OSIsoft EMEA User Conference held in Berlin, Germany, September 26th to 29th,  attracted over 900 clients, partners, and integrators.  This is an even larger number of participants than at last year's conference in Prague. The general session on the first day opened with the presentation of sponsors and new partners. Screen Shot 2016-09-29 at 12.44.44 Partnerships The partnership among OSIsoft, National Instruments, Flowserve and PTC stood out. “If you show a pump, everyone gets exited,” joked Martin Otterson, but the demonstrator showed a very complete and promising Industrial IoT application. A running pump, instrumented by National Instruments, sends vibration and temperature measurements through the Cloud to a PI Server, publishing the readings and alarms on PI Coresight screens visible on mobile devices. The demo showed the impact of cavitation and motor axis alignment deviation in real time, and show how an operator can remediate pump issues, without having to be next to the equipment to hear, feel, or see abnormal pump behavior. The solution is complemented by analytics from PTC ThinkWorx (which predicts when the system could fail), and augmented reality to help the maintenance technician read measurements and see drawings and maintenance instructions. The initial solution will be rolled out for Caterpillar rolling equipment. OSIsoft's relationship with SAP has taken an additional step with the SAP HANA IoT Connector by OSIsoft. Combining this with the SAP Asset Intelligence Network and Predictive Maintenance and Service offerings, the two companies can enable collaboration in a network of equipment providers, service providers, dealers, and operators who can all leverage operational, equipment, maintenance and service related information. Business Transformation Services OSIsoft announced Business Transformation Services, including support for building business cases and for project teams. Keynote: What Cloud, Big Data and Industrie 4.0 Means For the Process Industries The first part of the morning was concluded by a keynote by Felix Hanisch of Covestro, the specialty polymers company carved out of Bayer last year.  Dr. Hanisch discussed what Cloud, Big Data and Industrie 4.0 mean for the process industry.  The company aims "o make the world a brighter place, with smart ideas and smart products. Is Industrie 4.0 a new concept?  Yes and no: Vendor-managed inventory and the use of modeling in process optimization and energy management have been around for decades. But how can organizations take advantage of new possibilities? By optimizing a very constrained supply chain; leveraging growth by becoming more customer-centric, and starting “a new game” by using digitally enabled business models.  Dr. Hanisch concluded by saying: don’t panic: we have been using smart technologies since a long time.  We have proven we can be successful, for example in reducing CO2 exhaust by 40% compared to 2005 and we can continue to innovate and improve.  We need a solid data infrastructure to leverage applications company-wide.  Standardization organizations such as NAMUR help in this effort by creating an adaptable architecture upon which new applications can be built. We'll discuss the second part of the morning program in a follow-up blog.
