An omnipresent network of persons, things, and machines that crosses national and organizational borders exists in today's connected world. While this connectivity is often critical for manufacturers and other industrial organizations to transform themselves into information-driven enterprises, the downside is that those organizations inevitably also face new risks relative to safe and secure operations.
Business intelligence adoption remains low in many companies - even if it's used at all. There are many reasons for this. Certainly the high initial cost of a traditional on premise installation can be a big barrier to adoption for all but the largest organizations. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions can help to address that barrier with their pay-as-you-go fee structure.
This year's Cisco Live event attracted a record 25,000 attendees, with another 200,000 attending online. "Internet of Everything (IoE)" was once again a prominent theme, and one that seems to be embraced by the users as well as by Cisco executives. Anticipating "brutal consolidation among IT companies" in the next five years, Cisco has set itself on a path designed to ensure it will survive and prosper. That means rising above competition with commodity white box suppliers to offer customers needed services, security, software, and solutions.
Much of the focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) thus far has been on data generation and communication. But the bigger game beyond that is analytics. Analytics - as well as trading data - is where the money will be made. IoT analytics will usher in real-time analytics of data on the fly. But, it will also include analysis of historical data in the same way that traditional business intelligence has - there will just be more and different data.
