In ARC's recently published update to its
Multiphase Flow Metering global market study, we did not spend much time discussing how IIoT enabled multiphase flow metering (MPFM) solutions can help owner-operators realize greater operational visibility, flexibility and agility. In hindsight, perhaps there are some opportunities in which an IIoT enabled MPFM solution could provide owner-operators with greater visibility into managing the reservoir, enable real-time well monitoring and well testing, enhance artificial lift optimization, improve flow assurance, or ensure more timely production allocation information.
One of the main benefits of deploying MPFM solutions, in addition to reducing need for an expensive bulky separator, is providing near real-time multiphase flow measurement. This provides the operator with access to information that provides greater visibility into the reservoir or helps optimize production. An IIoT enabled solution that works in conjunction with a MPFM could provide even more timely information for well monitoring and well testing or increase production by providing greater visibility into the reservoir and increasing the collaboration of a reservoir engineer and a drilling engineer or a production engineer. ARC believes that enabling greater integration of data and information among operational groups is one of the more powerful benefits of IIoT enabled solutions.
So it seems that future updates of ARC’s Multiphase Flow Metering global market study need to delve deeper into the potential opportunities that IIoT enabled MPFM solutions can have as an effective tool in helping upstream oil & gas operators to extract hydrocarbons at a lower cost of BOE, provide more timely or accurate production allocations, or even enhance collaboration amongst key operational groups. We welcome any suggestions or comments from MPFM suppliers, owner-operators, or other industry stakeholders on how they think IIoT enabled MPFM solutions can add value.
