Carnival Corporation generally launches cruise ships, but at the 2017 CES show last week it launched an IIoT approach to cruising. Does it have industrial applications? Probably not in its present incarnation. But the concept of providing each person with a quarter-sized, 1.8-ounce disc that interacts with an Internet of Things (IoT) network of intelligent sensors and experiential computing devices could be useful in a variety of industrial settings.
A few years ago while on a cruise, my travel companion announced they wanted to develop a locator app for the ship. Not a bad idea given that cruise ships are sizeable and navigating one’s way around can be challenging. However, Carnival Corporation has now revealed a comprehensive platform, predicting that its Ocean Medallion will be a “game-changing guest experience”.

According to the press release, Ocean Medallion utilizes a proprietary xiOS network of intelligent sensors throughout the ship, home ports, and destinations to provide a “personalized digital concierge” based on user preferences. Passengers in Medallion Class receive a wearable device that interacts with these sensors and can view information using an online portal accessible in stateroom TVs, smart devices, and kiosks. By eliminating the "tap" step common in other user experience systems, Carnival projects the technology will not only revolutionize the cruise industry, but the entire vacation industry.
Carnival states the benefits of Ocean Medallion for passengers are faster embarkation and disembarkation, elimination of room keys, location tracking, enhanced dining experience, a personalized entertainment experience, conduct merchandise transactions, and enhances crew/guest interactions. Of course, the platform offers business benefit for Carnival too. If one has ever been on a cruise, you know that while very well organized, a digitally enhanced embarkation and disembarkation process would ease the burden of ship and port staff. Eliminating room keys removes that expense as well the hassle of lost keys. Enhanced guest/crew interaction enables faster service. Location tracking could be especially beneficial to Carnival in the event of a man overboard situation or other situation where data from the device could be used in an official capacity. In the opinion of this cruising analyst, the holy grail for the company is the ability to facilitate merchandize transactions in an environment where passengers have a virtually limitless number of options from which to choose. If an item is not included in the guest’s package, the system can quickly add it to your tab!
