Executive Overview
In 2002, ARC Advisory Group coined the term "Collaborative Process Automation Systems," or "CPAS," to describe a vision of how process automation systems should evolve. The initial report published that same year represented the culmination of extensive research into the state-of-the-art process control system. The goal was to identify technologies, standards, and principles available at the time to describe what a process automation system could and should be, based on end user needs. It be-came one of ARC's most successful reports. The latest iteration of CPAS, Version 3.0, adds detail and clarity of purpose to the evolving CPAS vision. This Strategy Report summarizes basic CPAS 3.0 concepts. The associated CPAS 3.0 study provides far more depth and detail.

Process automation encompasses upstream and downstream oil & gas; chemicals & petrochemicals; power generation; mining and minerals; pulp & paper; textiles and apparel; consumables such as food, pharmaceuticals, beverages and tobacco; plus other continuous process-oriented manufacturing industries. More than a decade after we published the first edition of CPAS, the process industries face even more challenges than at almost any time in the past. Based on numerous engagements with end user clients over the years, ARC has identified ten areas that relate to automation's potential impact on their evolving business requirements that need to be addressed:
