Freedom to Innovate

How does an entity grant itself the freedom to innovate? For Italy’s railway network infrastructure manager, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana S.p.A. (RFI), it came with the decision to become a modern, safe, and interoperable railway network. What did freedom to innovate mean for RFI?  It meant the ability to leverage advanced technologies, automate processes, and transform from process a oriented organization to one focused on service.  It meant the freedom to transform from a reactive organization to that of a proactive infrastructure provider.  It meant implementing an organizational structure that defines resources and rules, and an information system capable of managing large volumes of data and transforming that data into useful and actionable information.

Historically, RFI maintenance policies were preventative in nature and based on supplier recommendations and experience.  Paper-based systems supported manual processes.  Without data to support decision-making, subjectivity played a predominant role.  Compounding these inefficiencies, RFI was faced with reductions in rail maintenance funding and increased operating costs.  The activation of high speed rail lines added new technologies and maintenance requirements to the maintenance mix.

The freedom to innovate allowed RFI to redesign its maintenance strategy and systems from the bottom up - essentially building new maintenance processes to rationally define the most appropriate methodology from both the technical and organizational perspectives. An asset strategy centered on maintenance policy design was adopted, including provision of enhanced maintenance engineering support through reliability analysis and risk-based maintenance, and development of a maintenance plan for each asset based on analyses of its reliability and risk.

Innovate blogRFI selected Meridium Enterprise APM to manage and control asset performance due to its ability to support the entire project from design and implementation to post-sale support. Meridium Enterprise APM provided the foundation upon which to improve maintenance efficiency by optimizing internal resources.  Meridium software is utilized to monitor asset performance, evaluate asset reliability, and optimize maintenance policies.  Reliability analytics prioritize maintenance activities such that RFI’s business objective of obtaining the best value from its assets is continuous and sustainable.  As a certified SAP partner, integration of Meridium Enterprise APM with SAP ERP was seamless.  Since going live in early 2014, RFI has reported savings of €4 million.
