Overview

On September 17, 2026, Cognite hosted Cognite Impact 2026 World Tour Tokyo, attracting more than 400 participants from process industries, including energy, refining, chemicals, power generation, and pulp and paper. The event showcased the latest industrial AI applications and future industry directions.

Cognite’s Vision for the Evolution of Industrial AI

Founder John Markus Lervik described the evolution of industrial operations as Machine Learning → Generative AI → Agentic AI → Autonomous Operations. This vision is supported by three core layers: Cognite Data Fusion (data integration and contextualization), Atlas AI (industrial AI), and Cognite Flows (application execution platform). Cognite stated that it aims to create USD 100 billion in customer value by 2035.

Highlighted Use Cases

Presentations were delivered by Kansai Electric Power, Idemitsu Kosan, International Paper, Cosmo Oil, and AGC.

Kansai Electric Power

The company is developing an incident and injury prediction agent for hydropower operations. The solution is currently used at 30 plants, with plans to expand to 153 facilities. Key challenges include data quality, scalability, and user adoption.

Idemitsu Kosan

Idemitsu is transforming information sharing from PowerPoint-centric processes to data-centric operations using Cognite Data Fusion. Applications include AI summarization, near-miss analysis, and yield evaluation.

International Paper

International Paper integrates mill data to support nonconforming product (NCP) management and Golden Run analysis. Linking quality and operational data enables quality improvement and operational optimization.

Cosmo Oil

Cosmo Oil is leveraging natural-language-driven application development to support maintenance activities across refineries, including specialized use cases such as creep damage assessment.

AGC: A Practical Example of Industrial AI Deployment

Among the presentations, AGC provided one of the most compelling examples of industrial AI adoption. Facing labor shortages and demographic challenges in Japan, AGC is pursuing a Cognite deployment to improve operational efficiency and enable workforce reallocation. Analysis revealed that personnel conducting troubleshooting spent significant time preparing reports, much of which was devoted to searching for scattered information. Equipment data, operational records, maintenance histories, and engineering documents existed in silos with limited contextual relationships.

AGC selected Cognite Data Fusion to address this challenge through contextualized information management. During the PoC, approximately 80 percent of data contextualization was automated, while Atlas AI enabled rapid development of search and knowledge applications. Positive qualitative and quantitative results led to a decision to expand the deployment.

AGC outlined a three-step roadmap: Step 1, Data Integration and Contextualization; Step 2, Democratization of AI; and Step 3, Autonomous Execution Systems. The envisioned division of labor evolves from human-performed work to human-directed work and ultimately to a model where humans focus primarily on exception handling.

Turning the Impossible into the Possible

Ori Yoshifuji of Ory Laboratory presented how the OriHime avatar robot enables broader social participation. His message that the value of technology lies not in the technology itself but in what people can achieve through it resonated strongly with the industrial AI theme.

Cognite Flows and Business Operationalization

A recurring theme throughout the event was that success depends not on AI models alone, but on contextualized data and operational deployment. Cognite Flows provides Native Apps, Custom Apps, and Adaptive Experiences, with a vision of reducing industrial application development cycles from approximately 18 months to as little as seven days.

Key Takeaways

The event demonstrated that industrial AI is rapidly moving beyond proof-of-concept projects into enterprise-scale deployment and operationalization. AGC’s experience highlights that successful AI journeys begin with contextualized, accessible information rather than advanced algorithms alone. Cognite’s combination of Data Fusion, Atlas AI, and Flows is positioned as a unified approach spanning data integration, AI enablement, and operational execution, reflecting a broader shift across industry from experimentation to scaled value realization.
