The platform decouples hardware and software to support flexible modernization, cybersecurity, and lifecycle continuity.

Schneider Electric introduced EcoStruxure Foxboro Software Defined Automation (SDA), an open, software-defined distributed control system designed for hybrid and process industry environments. The system combines Foxboro’s established control capabilities with a software-defined architecture to help industrial operators modernize operations while reducing upgrade risk and maintaining reliability.
For decades, Foxboro systems have supported real-time control and coordination of complex industrial processes. As industrial environments face increasing demands for agility, cost control, and compliance, the software-defined approach is designed to help enable modernization without requiring wholesale replacement of existing infrastructure.
Open and Software-Defined Control Architecture
EcoStruxure Foxboro SDA decouples control software from hardware, enabling greater interoperability and flexibility across automation environments. The architecture is designed to help protect existing investments while supporting a lower-risk, phased modernization path that is better aligned with evolving operational requirements.
The system is powered by EcoStruxure Automation Expert and is designed to support distributed control configurations while maintaining high availability and digital continuity across the plant lifecycle.
Key Capabilities
EcoStruxure Foxboro SDA is designed to support industrial operators by enabling:
Open, software-defined architecture, supporting vendor independence and interoperable system design.
Secure-by-design operations, aligned with IEC 62443-3-3 cybersecurity requirements.
Simplified operations and cost control, reducing hardware dependency and minimizing obsolescence-related downtime.
Lifecycle continuity, maintaining consistent data from engineering through operations and maintenance.
Support for IT/OT convergence, enabling integration with analytics, AI, and advanced automation technologies.
By maintaining a unified data model across the lifecycle, the system supports automated workflows, improved product quality, and more consistent integration with real-time analytics.
Industry Perspective on Software-Defined Automation
“The launch of EcoStruxure™ Foxboro SDA marks a major milestone in the evolution of process automation,” said Craig Resnick, Vice President at ARC Advisory Group. “By decoupling control logic from hardware, Schneider Electric is providing manufacturers with the agility to scale, adapt, and simplify their operations. This software defined approach helps to reduce maintenance costs, protect legacy automation investments, and ensure digital continuity throughout the entire plant lifecycle. With cybersecurity built into its core, and a commitment to open, interoperable standards, Foxboro SDA enables manufacturers to modernize at their own pace, accelerate IT and OT convergence, and increase their adoption of next generation technologies, such as AI, edge computing, and autonomous operations.”
Supporting Long-Term Industrial Modernization
The software-defined DCS approach reflects a broader shift toward more adaptable and lifecycle-oriented automation architectures. By combining open standards, embedded cybersecurity, and distributed intelligence, EcoStruxure Foxboro SDA is positioned to support long-term modernization strategies across hybrid and process industries without disrupting ongoing operations.
