The key points are that increasing dynamics of industrial production (supply chain volatility, new products, re-engineering of facilities and organization) is both caused and addressed by information technologies. Industrial IT needs to support the enterprise in its ongoing transformation, take advantage of new IT technologies while dampening its side effects.  Technology changes happen step by step, by the enterprise IT changes continuously even in the case of large projects.
The performance of transformation of industrial IT must be managed in order to focus efforts, to adjust to budget constraints and align with the enterprise strategy.  In addition it must respect both short and long term objective.  This performance management complements direct hierarchical control influencing behaviour of individuals.
To ensure success and survival of the enterprise, (local) performance targets of subsystems need to be aligned with global enterprise objectives.  Jean introduced the concept of Overall Interactive Enterprise Effectiveness that helps specifying these objectives and establishing this alignment.
Jean Vieille’s presentation also showed how systems modeling helps visualizing these relationships and making adjustments to improve performance management.  An example of a conflict of interest between targets set by upper management for a system supporting R&D with individuals doing the actual work, illustrates the use of system modeling.
