OPC Workshop: OPC UA as an Enabler for Digital Transformation - Status and Roadmap

This presentation gives an overview of the current status of the OPC Foundation, the largest ecosystem for industrial interoperability. OPC UA technology (IEC62541) is much more than just a protocol to exchange information, scaling from field to cloud (and back). The independence of vendors, markets, integrated end-to-end security, and underlaying extensible protocols, but most importantly, the mechanism to describe the information model, has made OPC UA the perfect, unique, and globally accepted standard.

Workshop attendees receive a comprehensive overview of the two most important topics influencing the world of factory and process automation:

  1. The Field Level Communications (FLC) initiative of the OPC Foundation is extending OPC UA to the field level, including motion, functional safety, distributed I/O, all in real-time. Learn about the world’s largest automation initiative with contributions from more than 300 industry experts, including all major automation suppliers, making OPC FLC the gravity center for defining OPC UA over Advanced Physical Layer (APL) for the process industry but also supporting Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) for discrete automation.
  2. Connectivity is not enough – standardized semantics is required. The OPC Foundation collaborates with over 60 initiatives the world over; 35 of which are driven by VDMA (the largest European association for machinery) defining the global production language as a key for digitalization. VDMA defines “OPC UA for machinery” as a quality promise for "Plug & Produce", which end users will soon mandate from their suppliers.
