Overview

Sustainability was a key topic at the recent industry forum organized by ARC in Sitges, Spain, alongside other major trends such as digital transformation, AI, and open automation. Its relevance reflects how decarbonization is driving innovation and strategic change across the industry, particularly in Europe.

Sessions explored various aspects of the transition, including a keynote on the role of bioeconomy, a panel on energy transition with examples in efficiency, electrification, and hydrogen, and a discussion on circular economy use cases. The Innovation Corner featured a startup presenting a digital solution to enhance energy efficiency, while the Academic Corner showcased hydrogen-related case studies from professors engaged in applied research. These discussions highlighted the industry’s evolving priorities, and the collaborative efforts needed to support a more sustainable future.

Cefic’s Vision for a Sustainable and Competitive Europe

The forum opened with a keynote on sustainability, reflecting the importance ARC places on this topic as a key force shaping the future of industry. Delivered by Marco Pellegrini of the European Chemical Industry Council Cefic, the session focused on the growing role of the circular bioeconomy in Europe and its potential to support industrial decarbonization.

Marco captured the audience’s attention by referencing “Professor Balthazar,” a Croatian cartoon character from the 1970s known for inventing imaginative solutions to complex problems. One invention—a machine that transformed industrial waste into energy—was a fitting metaphor for today’s real-world efforts. “We need Professor Balthazar,” Marco said, drawing a playful yet meaningful connection between creativity and sustainability.

The Path Ahead – Cefic iC2050 Model Marco explained how the European Chemical Industry Council Cefic contributes to shaping legislative frameworks that foster innovation in sustainability while maintaining the global competitiveness of European industry. By balancing environmental and economic priorities, the circular bioeconomy is emerging not just as a concept, but as a practical pathway to decarbonization.

The keynote set a dynamic tone for the forum, connecting past inspiration with present-day strategy in the push for a more sustainable industrial landscape.
