Supply Chain Management

This Supply Chain Management market research delivers current market analysis plus a five year market and technology forecast. This supply chain research covers Supply Chain Planning Software, Transportation Management Systems, and Warehouse Management Sytems.

The Supply Chain Solutions Market Is Driven by Continued E-Commerce Growth

ARC Advisory Group finds that the continued growth of e-commerce from the initial surge during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased customer expectations and new fulfillment models for supply chain solutions. The supply chain planning software market grew at a double-digit rate over the last several years, even during the pandemic. It is unusual for a mature, multibillion dollar market to grow so fast. The transportation management systems market grew steadily in 2023. Coming out of the pandemic, the TMS market was poised for growth as the economy rebounded. Part of this is the nature of TMS and the industries it serves, such as CPG and food & beverage in particular. Direct-to-consumer (e-commerce/omni-channel) fulfillment requirements remain the greatest factor contributing to the growth of the global warehouse management systems market. Furthermore, the need for expedited delivery has encouraged companies to adjust fulfillment capabilities or even relocate facilities closer to consumers, further contributing to the demand for WMS’ functional enhancements.

Supply Chain Strategic Issues

Supply Chain Market TrendsIn addition to providing a five-year market forecast, the Supply Chain Management market research provides detailed quantitative current market data and addresses key strategic issues.

Beware the Digital Twin Hype

A digital twin is a virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process. The term “virtual representation” in SCP means a model. We should not be speaking of a digital twin, singular, but digital twins, plural. Different types of models are good for solving different kinds of problems. The demand model is different from the supply model. In terms of supply modeling, many companies will find that they need one model for supply chain design, another for tactical planning, and another for operational planning. Models are getting broader and deeper, and this is to be applauded. Where a supply network model used to consist of a model of multiple factories and warehouses, today we are seeing models that include a much broader set of constraints: purchase agreements, store replenishment, transportation, ESG, and others as well. These broader models are better models. Finally, these should be “living models”–models that get broader and deeper over time.

Embrace Demand Sensing and other Data Sources

Traditional demand forecasting is based on the presumption that history repeats itself. Even in the best of times, this method has limitations. During the pandemic, it completely failed. For companies trying to predict demand in March of 2020 as the world was descending into lockdown and everything was being turned upside down, what happened in March of 2019 had little to no relevance. The pandemic created seismic changes in customer behavior. Companies that made use of planning systems that combined demand sensing–the use of multiple, real-time signals (like sales in a particular store or shipments from a retailer’s warehouses to their stores)–and machine learning, produced more accurate forecasts in almost all instances. In times of dramatic swings in demand, demand sensing forecasts are even better–they adjust to the swings in demand much more quickly. Demand sensing applies mostly to short-term demand forecasts. But industry and government data can be used to improve long term strategic forecasts for demand, component availability, and other key inputs to a strategic plan. Again, machine learning can improve the accuracy of these kinds of forecasts.

Think Holistically

WMS suppliers have been competing based on a platform strategy for a number of years. This has allowed many customers to obtain value from synergies across applications. These organizations are deriving value from workflows that cross applications, cross-solution visibility, lower maintenance and upgrade costs, and improved business analytics. A cross-functional evaluation of system requirements can provide organizations with a holistic view of needs and enable them to prioritize and conduct a thorough cost-benefit analysis. Digital transformations are often focused on core company goals that include better customer service, an engaged workforce, and lower costs. A WMS can support these corporate goals.
