CNC Market Demand Undergoes Sequential Downturn

Computer numerical control (CNC) is an application-specific motion control system for industrial machinery, with a primary focus the machine tool market.   The largest segment of the machine tool market is metal working machinery, however, the applications for CNC systems has continued to expand into other areas such as additive manufacturing, 3D printing, laser cutting, water jet, wood, plastics, and glass sectors. These offer growth opportunities for CNC suppliers and OEMs alike.

The machine tool industry faced a challenging business environment in 2015 and 2016 because of the declining markets in emerging economies as well as in North America, which is a large source of shipments of capital equipment from Japan, Taiwan, and other developed countries.  In 2015, the CNC market experienced a significant decline while the market in 2016 continued this decline as the global market for machine tools developed even worse.  The final quarter of 2016 was very strong, however this was not enough to make up for the downturn experienced during the months prior to this.

ARC research says that the demand for CNC systems will recover and continue to grow, but at a slower pace as shown in the past.  The reason behind is the slowdown in emerging economies, mainly in China, and the slow but steady increase of electric vehicles that will have an impact on manufacturing processes in the automotive industry, the main end user industry for CNC systems.

Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) Market Trends

  • Multitasking machinery offers the highest growth potential for CNC systems.  Higher productivity, improved accuracy, and reduction in production costs are all factors driving this sector.
  • The new emerging middle class in emerging economies will create additional demand for automobiles, white goods, infrastructure, and packaged goods in growing markets, such as China, India, and Latin America.  This will increase demand in other connected industries as well, such as metals, automotive, and a wide range of manufacturing machinery.

Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) Strategic Trends

  • The marriage of product design and production design is improving machine tool optimization; the integration of these steps is increasing productivity.Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) mira-workbook-pam-300px.jpg
  • The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or Industrie 4.0 is an ideal opportunity for CNC systems.  Connected CNC machine tools will be important component of big data collected from the factory floor.
  • Evaluation of machine performance is changing, as customers and machine builders begin monitoring their machinery to determine optimal running conditions.  This has become the predominant business case for developing an ecosystem built on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in the industrial machinery market.
