ARC Advisory Group recently attended the Entelec 2015 conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. This marks the 87th year that the Entelec (Energy Telecommunications and Electrical Association) conference has provided a forum for industry participants to share information. It has been interesting to follow how the "hot topics" at Entelec have evolved over the years. This year, the increasing importance of cyber security, plus the increasing utilization of the Internet in network systems and the related challenges facing wireless communications and components for remote operations took center stage.
Attendance for the three-day event increased 6 percent over last year and there were nearly 200 exhibitors. Entelec included both the exhibition and five different technical session tracks. Technical session topics included regulatory issues, approaches for mitigating cyber security risks, field data communications for SCADA and telemetry, remote site power, bandwidth pressures, and Internet technology for remote monitoring and other Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-related topics.
A number of strategic technology roundtable discussions delved into government regulations, SCADA, and telecommunications. The keynote addresses were directed at leadership development.
