Executive Overview
As the pressure mounts yearly for the chemical industry to become more sustainable, more companies are defining net-zero objectives and clear decarbonization plans. Major chemical companies have set clear plans to heavily reduce their carbon footprint by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. The industry will certainly go through deep changes in the upcoming decade to achieve this. In this context, companies are looking for trusted solution providers that can help them design the most efficient plan and support them in the transition to ensure adoption of the new technologies.
To address this complex challenge, ARC has explored the requirements of the market and mapped it with the solutions that leading automation companies are providing. The aim of this study is to understand how well these companies are fulfilling the need for increased sustainability in the chemical industry.
More than twenty companies were analyzed. Three are the leaders in the market as they cover most of the challenges facing chemical companies to achieve their decarbonization objectives. There are also other leaders focused on specific solutions which we believe are critical as well. Following are the key highlights:
Three leaders in the industry: Siemens, Schneider Electric, and Emerson.
Aspen Technology is the most well established in the chemical industry as a software provider for process optimization.
Most of the companies covered in the scope are focusing on process efficiency and many on energy efficiency.
Introduction to Champions Radar
The Value of Champions Radar
The objective of the Champions Radar is to map the solutions offered by solution providers to meet specific market demands. The intention is to understand how well the need in the market is fulfilled by them. The study brings valuable information for end users and solution providers. It helps to identify who are the leaders in the market in relation to specific needs from end users. End users can use the results to identify potential providers that will be more suitable for their specific requirements.
The radar also brings value to solution providers as it can provide information to understand how they compare to competitors, what are their strengths and weaknesses. It can also help them to understand what the opportunities are to further grow in the market. Through the process of elaborating this study, we found that the sole exercise of contributing to it helps solution providers to better understand their solutions and how well explained they are to the market.
The Champions Radar Process
The process of developing the study starts by approaching end users to discuss specific challenges. We explore their vision, the obstacles they encounter, and the solutions they apply or are looking for. We also discuss what they value the most from solution providers. The next step is to map the need in the market with the value proposition from solution providers. We researched what hardware, software and services they provide in relation to the information provided by end users. Following up we intend to validate the information collected directly with the solution providers. We want to ensure to bring the most accurate information to the study. We finally created the Champions Radar by evaluating each solution against the indicators defined together with end users, combining the solution capabilities, experience, and revenue.
Champions Radar for Decarbonization Technologies in Chemical Industry
The study covered topics related to decarbonization roadmap, energy efficiency, energy transition, carbon capture and alternative feedstocks. Major automation companies were considered in the analysis by exploring their value proposition in terms of what hardware, software, and services they provide to the industry. The result is shown in Figure 2 and following are some quick reflections:
Three leaders in the industry: Siemens, Schneider Electric and Emerson.
Aspen Technology is very well established in the chemical industry as a software provider for process optimization.
Most of the companies covered in the scope are focusing on process efficiency and many on energy efficiency.
Segments and Indicators
Decarbonizing the chemical industry is a complex challenge linked to many aspects of the industry. It requires a transformation in the way companies manage their business. Because of this, the study covered many different aspects, which were divided in segments and indicators shown in Table 1.
Champions Radar Analysis
The chart shows a good distribution of the companies, with a higher concentration in the area related to products and systems. Three leaders can be highlighted: Siemens, Emerson and Schneider Electric, with similar revenue related to the scope of the study. All companies provide solutions for most of the segments and items described earlier, and specifically for those that are believed to have highest impact in decarbonizing the industry: decarbonization roadmap, energy transition, alternative feedstocks, and end of life treatment. With these three solution providers, end users can expect to have holistic support to help them achieve their net-zero objectives.

The next four leading companies are: Honeywell, ABB, Yokogawa and Aspen Technologies. Honeywell offers different solutions related to process efficiency, energy transition, byproduct treatment and plastic recycling. ABB and Yokogawa are very well established in the chemical industry and actively supporting companies to improve energy efficiency. ABB focuses on electrification, and Yokogawa in process efficiency.
