Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd., headquartered in Espoo, Finland to collaborate on the development of key nature-positive technologies, which are initially expected to include direct ocean capture (DOC) technology for the direct removal of CO2 from seawater.
In collaboration with VTT, Northern Europe's largest comprehensive research institute, Mitsubishi Electric aims to develop DOC, a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology designed to extract CO2 from oceans. This initiative will help reduce ocean acidification, contributing to carbon neutrality and other positive environmental outcomes. Ocean acidification, the gradual reduction of ocean pH due to the absorption of atmospheric CO2, is making seawater more acidic. This poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems and has a significant negative impact on economic activities like the fishing industry.
Mitsubishi Electric has made sustainability a fundamental part of its business strategy. Mitsubishi Electric will work to speed up the development of DOC technology to bring it to implementation as soon as possible. In collaboration with VTT, the company will also advance various related technological initiatives. These efforts aim to address urgent global environmental challenges.
