PTC introduced new model-based definition (MBD) capabilities in its Onshape® computer-aided design (CAD) and product data management (PDM) platform. This MBD solution is being delivered within a fully cloud-native CAD and PDM system.

With MBD in Onshape, engineering teams can embed product manufacturing information (PMI) directly into the 3D model, helping to eliminate reliance on 2D drawings and create a more complete digital product definition. Embedded information includes:

  • Dimensions and tolerances.

  • Annotations and surface finishes.

  • Material specifications.

  • Other critical manufacturing attributes.

Cloud-native MBD helps to improve cross-functional collaboration by making this information immediately accessible to engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams from multiple devices or locations.

The MBD feature is currently part of an early visibility program with select users and is expected to become generally available in late 2025.

This update reflects a broader shift toward eliminating 2D dependencies in the design-to-manufacturing process. By embedding intent into the model itself, companies can help to reduce interpretation errors, improve speed, and move toward certifying products with a fully digital workflow.
