At Emerson Exchange 2015, the message was on streamlining capital project execution by reducing projects costs and complexity using best practices to ensure projects stay on budget and on time it. Former Emerson Process Management President, Steve Sonnenberg, stated that dramatic, rather than incremental, performance improvement will be required to drive this change, but fell short of including the Industrial Internet of Things as a component of the strategy. Fast forward to Emerson Exchange 2016, newly minted Emerson Automation Solutions launched its Plantweb Digital Ecosystem, an IIoT-architected portfolio of hardware, software, intelligent devices, and services.
The new Plantweb portfolio is an entire suite of products, applications, and services that securely ties data, applications, and services together across the entire enterprise. Building on its Pervasive Sensing strategy, the ecosystem approach enables Emerson to focus on its strength in measurement technologies while its partners will fill any gaps in architecture. Emerson has chosen Microsoft Azure IoT Suite for private cloud networks and third-party cloud service relationships. Other ecosystem partners are OSIsoft and Dell.
According to Emerson, lack of tangible business benefits from IIoT has been an inhibitor to adoption. Expectations are that new applications available with Plantweb will help to overcome this objection. Plantweb Insight is a lightweight portfolio of applications for asset health monitoring with light IT requirement to match. For more robust requirements, Plantweb Advisor includes applications for asset health, performance modeling, and energy optimization. Emerson’s recently launched AMS ARES platform pushes aggregated asset health information to plant personnel based in role-based views. For mobile access to information, Always Mobile, extends the reach of Plantweb anytime, anywhere. Plantweb culminates in cloud-based Connected Services where Emerson experts provide real-time monitoring of asset health, energy consumption and other applications.
Plantweb Digital Ecosystem does not change Emerson’s Operational Certainty focus on helping its customers achieve top quartile performance, but it arms the company with new tools to deliver knowledge to those that want to achieve it.
