Study Overview
The TMS Market Emerges from the Brutal Global Recession
ARC has a broad definition of Transportation Management Systems (TMS).  ARC segments the TMS market into three basic solution types:

  • Planning & Execution:  This type is used by a shipper who uses carriers to move their freight.  It covers the entire process a shipper should follow in procuring, planning, and executing moves.
  • Fleet Management:  This type is used by shippers/carriers that own transportation assets.  It encompasses the entire planning to execution process for fleet owners.
  • Point Solution:  Any solution that covers a rather small part of the end-to-end process.

When many people talk about transportation management, they are talking about planning and execution.  This study also contains detailed segmentation information on additional types of transportation solutions.

The Transportation Management market has emerged from the recession.  Further, robust growth is forecast through 2015 as a perfect storm of rising fuel prices, capacity shortages driven by a declining pool of drivers, increasing governmental regulation, increasing numbers of companies committing to becoming green, and the increased maturation of the TMS product set is expected.

Strategic Issues
While suppliers always need to care about the ROI associated with their product development, intelligent product development helps to differentiate solutions and improve the ROI that their customers get from their solutions.  The study examines:

  • The degree of functionality associated with SaaS solutions.  Can SaaS solutions be as robust as traditional behind the firewall solutions?
  • The maturation of BI.  What are users looking for in a TMS BI module?
  • GPS technologies.  How can fleet management solutions better leverage GPS?  How can planning and execution solutions use GPS and GIS technologies?
  • How are the leading suppliers attempting to differentiate themselves?  What challenges do they face?
